Rainy

River that rises in Rainy Lake, southwest Ontario, Canada, flows along the Canadian–US border, and empties into the Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota, USA; length 80 km/50 mi. It is dammed at International Falls to produce power, and is also used for logging and fishing.

The river and lake are so named because American Indians said it ‘rained all the time’, referring to the mist surrounding the waterfall where Rainy Lake empties into the river.
