Rainy| River that rises in Rainy Lake, southwest Ontario, Canada, flows along the Canadian–US border, and empties into the Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota, USA; length 80 km/50 mi. It is dammed at International Falls to produce power, and is also used for logging and fishing. |
| The river and lake are so named because American Indians said it ‘rained all the time’, referring to the mist surrounding the waterfall where Rainy Lake empties into the river. |
