Rais, Amien (1935– )

Indonesian politician and leader of the 28-million-member Muslim organization Mohammadiyeh. A university lecturer with a doctorate in politics from the University of Chicago, Rais was a leading government critic and in March 1998 demanded President Suharto's resignation. Although he lacked a well-organized political machine he was considered one of the leading contenders to replace President Habibie.
