Rais (or Retz), Gilles de (1404–1440)

French baron and marshal who fought alongside Joan of Arc. He was known for his bravery in war, but also for his cruelty. In 1440 he was hanged for the torture and murder of 140 children, but the court proceedings were irregular. He is the historical basis of the Bluebeard character.
