Raisz, Erwin (Josephus) (1893–1968)

Hungarian-born US cartographer and geographer who produced hand-drawn maps with great character and elegant calligraphy. His General Cartography 1938 was the first book of its kind in the English language. His Principles of Cartography was published in 1962.

Born in Locse, he went to the USA in 1923, working first for the American Geographical Society in New York City and, from the 1930s to 1950s, for Harvard's Institute of Geographical Exploration.
