Raleigh, Fort

Site of the first English settlement in America, at the north end of Roanoke Island, North Carolina, USA, to which in 1585 English explorer Walter Raleigh sent 108 colonists from Plymouth, England, under his cousin Richard Grenville. In 1586 Francis Drake took the dissatisfied survivors back to England. The outline fortifications are preserved.
