Ramallah

City in Palestine, situated in the central part of the West Bank, 16km/10mi north of Jerusalem. It was formerly a resort town known as the ‘Bride of Palestine’. Extensive migration of the predominantly Christian population took place during the Israeli occupation that ended in December 1995. Many institutions of the Palestine National Authority (PNA) are sited in Ramallah.

Ramallah has been the site of repeated violence during the Palestinian uprisings (Intifada) and the time of the Israel–Palestine peace process. There were particularly fierce battles in Ramallah in October 2000 and March 2001, with Israeli tanks and helicopter gunships hitting Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) targets.
