Ramey, Samuel

Ramey, Samuel (1942– )

US bass-baritone. He made his debut in 1973 with the New York City Opera, as Zuniga; other roles there have been Méphistophélès, Don Giovanni, Leporello, Donizetti's Henry VIII, and Attila. He appeared at Glyndebourne from 1976, as Mozart's Figaro and Nick Shadow and at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in Rinaldo (1984). He has taken part in the revival of interest in Rossini's serious operas, singing Mosè at the Paris Opéra (1983) and Assur in a 1986 concert performance of Semiramide at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. He recorded the title role in Maometto II.
