Ramgoolam, Navin Chandra (1947– )

Mauritian politician, prime minister 1995–2000 and from 2005. He became leader of the centrist, Hindu-oriented Mauritius Labour Party (MLP) in 1991, becoming its president soon afterwards. Entering an electoral agreement with the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), the MLP and MMM secured a landslide victory and Ramgoolam was appointed prime minister.

Son of Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the country's first prime minister, Ramgoolam practised as a doctor and lawyer before entering politics and becoming leader of the MLP.
