Ramla

Town in Israel, 20 km/12 mi southeast of Tel Aviv-Yafo; population (1990 est) 45,000. Before its capture by the Israeli army in1948, Ramla was an Arab town.

Ramla was founded in 716 by the Umayyads. The town was captured by the Crusaders in 1187, and became the headquarters of Richard (I) the Lion-Heart. The town contains the ‘Tower of the Forty Martyrs’, of Muslim origin, dating from the 14th century.
