Ramsey

Small town in Cambridgeshire, England, 18 km/11 mi northeast of Huntingdon; population (2001) 8,050. It is situated on the edge of the Fens. The town owes its importance to the foundation of a Benedictine abbey here in 969 by Duke Ailwyn, ‘Alderman of all England’.

The remains of the abbey buildings include the 13th-century Lady Chapel (now part of the grammar school), projecting eastwards from the site of the north transept; part of a 15th-century gatehouse; and the 12th-century parish church, which was originally a guest-house or hospital attached to the monastery.

Town in the Isle of Man, England, at the northern end of the island's central mountain range, 23 km/14 mi from Douglas; population (2001) 7,300. It has a few small industries, but is primarily a market town for the north of the island, a residential centre, and a holiday resort. Ramsey has a harbour (dry at low tide) formerly used by a fishing fleet.

Town in Anoka County, southeast Minnesota; population (1990) 12,400. It is situated on the Mississippi River, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Minneapolis. One of the outermost suburbs of the Twin Cities, it lies along the Twin Cities–St Cloud corridor. New commercial development occurred in the 1980s in the eastern section of the community. The Gateway North Industrial Airport is on its southern edge.

Ramsey

Town in Bergen County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 13,200. It is located 16 km/10 mi north of Paterson and to the south of the New York state border. It was settled in the mid 19th century, and is now essentially a bedroom community for the New York metropolitan area. Skiing facilities, several small lakes, and dairy farms are nearby.
