Suriname toad

Large, tongueless toad Pipa pipa, the only representative of its genus and family. Its most remarkable feature is the hatching of the eggs each in a small pouch on the back of the female. During copulation the paired toads swim upside down, the eggs falling onto the male's stomach; upon righting, the eggs drop onto the female's back. Metamorphosis of the young is completed before they escape. The toad's head is broad and pointed and the body is brownish-olive. It is peculiar to Suriname.
