Ranchi

Town and capital of Jharkhand state, northeast India; population (1991) 614,500. Situated on the Chota Nagpur plateau, 600 m/2,000 ft above sea level and 320 km/200 mi northwest of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), it is a popular holiday destination. The Bharat Heavy Engineering plant at nearby Hatia has contributed to the town's rapid growth; other local industries include the manufacture of porcelain and lacquerware. It is an important educational centre.
