Ranczak, Hildegard (1895–1987)

Bohemian soprano. After study in Vienna she made her debut at Dusseldorf in 1919, as Pamina. She sang in Cologne and Stuttgart before becoming a member of the Munich Staatsoper in 1929. Known for her Strauss roles, she created Clairon in Capriccio (1942) and also sang Zdenka, Octavian, the Dyer's Wife, and Aithra (Die Ägyptische Helena). She sang in Vienna from 1931 and appeared as Salome at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London in 1937. In 1950 she sang Carmen at Munich before retiring.
