Randfontein

Town in Gauteng province, South Africa, 45 km/28 mi northwest of Johannesburg; population (district, 1991) 116,400. It is one of the Rand ‘gold towns’. Nearby there are gold and uranium mines. Textiles are manufactured, and there is some heavy industry. The town is the commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural area.

Randfontein was established in 1889, and became a municipality in 1929.
