Randolph, Edmund

Randolph, Edmund (1753–1813)

American politician. In 1786 he was elected governor of Virginia. He took part in the Constitutional Convention 1787, and in 1789 George Washington made him first Attorney General of the USA. After being secretary of state for a year in Washington's cabinet, Randolph resigned 1795 over unfounded allegations.

Randolph was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, educated at William and Mary College, and became attorney general of Virginia 1776. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress 1779–82. After 1795 he returned to Virginia as a leader of the Bar.

He published A Vindication of Mr Randolph's Resignation 1795 and Past and Present State of Affairs Public 1796.
