Rands, Bernard (1935– )

English composer. His music uses electronic techniques and is strongly influenced by Berio.

He studied at University College of North Wales, Bangor, and then in Italy with Roman Vlad and Luigi Dallapiccola. He lectured at Bangor 1961–70, and at York University 1970–76. In 1976 he moved to the USA and taught at the universities of California and Boston.

Refractions for 24 performers; Actions for Six for flute, viola, cello, harp, and two percussion players (1963); Quartet Music for piano quartet; Four Compositions for violin and piano; Espressione IV for two pianos; Three Aspects for piano; Formants for harp (1965); As All Get Out for chamber ensemble (1972); ... in the receding mist.. for ensemble (1988).
