Rangers

US Army special forces in World War II; specially trained and equipped highly mobile troops, modelled on the British commandos.

The 1st Ranger Battalion was trained at the British commando training centre in Scotland in 1942, and four more battalions were then raised. They served in the landings in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Normandy with distinction. However, some US commanders failed to appreciate their special role and employed them as ordinary infantry. They were disbanded soon after the war.
