Paschal II (died 1118)

Pope, 1099–1118. He reigned during the periods of the investiture contest, bringing him into conflict with the Holy Roman emperors Henry IV and Henry V, as well as Henry I of England. He was seized and imprisoned by Henry V in 1111 but released on a promise to restore the right of investiture. He withdrew his promise later and excommunicated the emperor in 1112. He was born in Galeata, near Ravenna, Italy.
