Rankin, Nell (1926–2005)

US mezzo-soprano. She studied with Karin Branzell in New York and made her debut at Zurich in 1949. In 1951 she sang in the Verdi Requiem at La Scala, Milan; from 1951 she appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, as Amneris, Gutrune, Ulrica, Azucena, and Marina. Other roles include Carmen (the role she sang for her debuts at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London (1953) and San Francisco debuts (1955)) and Cassandre in Les Troyens (La Scala, Milan, 1960).
