Rankin Inlet

Hamlet in Keewatin Region, located in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, Canada; population (1996 est) 2,100. It is situated on the northwest shore of Hudson Bay, 470 km/290 mi north-northeast of Churchill, Manitoba. Historically it was an Inuit community in an area that was used by 19th-century whalers. In the period 1957-62 it had a nickel-mining boom; some copper was also extracted nearby.

Features include Meliadine River Territorial Park to the northeast. The inlet is also home to the Inuit Cultural Institute (1974) and part of Nunavut Arctic College (1984).
