Ransome, F(rederick) L(eslie) (1868-1935)

English-born US geologist who made major contributions to studies of water and dam management and the importance of foreknowledge of geological faults in mining projects.

Born in Greenwich, he emigrated to San Francisco with his family in 1870. After teaching geology at Harvard 1886-97, he served with the US Geological Survey 1897-1923 where he made field investigations of western US metal mining. He joined the University of Arizona in1923, then taught at the California Institute of Technology 1928-35.
