Rantoul

Town in Champaign County, east-central Illinois; population (1990) 17,200. It is located 21 km/12 mi north-northeast of Champaign and lies to the south of Chicago. It is a trading centre for agricultural products. Products include electronic equipment and motorcycle parts. Chanute Field is one of the oldest and largest technical training centres of the US Air Force. The first American settler built a cabin in the area in 1848, but Rantoul really dates from 1854, when the Illinois Central Railroad established a station here.
