Rape of Lucretia, The

Opera by Benjamin Britten (libretto by Ronald Duncan, based on Livy, Shakespeare, and Obey's Viol de Lucrèce), produced at Glyndebourne in East Sussex, England, on 12 July 1946. The story is set in ancient Rome, where Lucretia is reckoned to be the only chaste woman. Prince Tarquinius sets out to test this, arriving at her house and asking for a bed for the night. While Lucretia sleeps, Tarquinius appears in her bedroom and kisses her. At first Lucretia responds, believing it to be her husband, but soon she realizes the awful truth. The next morning she is overcome by shame and stabs herself.
