Raphael, Günther (1903–1960)

German composer. In his early 20s he succeeded in having works published, played by the Busch quartet, and conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler among others. He was professor at the Leipzig Conservatory 1926–34, resigning after the Nazis banned his music; after World War II he taught at Duisburg Conservatory 1949–53, and from 1957 at the Cologne Musikhochschule.

He studied under his father, a church organist, and later with Max Trapp and Robert Kahn at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik.

Works

Sacred choral music

Requiem (1928), Te Deum (1930), cantata Vater unser (1945); 16 motets, Psalm civ and other unaccompanied sacred choral works.

Orchestral

five symphonies (1926–53), sinfonietta, Theme, Variations and Rondo, divertimento, Smetana Suite for orchestra; two violin concertos (1921, 1960), organ concerto (1936).

Chamber

chamber concerto for cello with wind and strings, much other chamber music; organ and piano works.
