Raphoe

Market town in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, 10 km/6 mi northwest of Lifford; population (2002) 1,330. It is the centre of the Lagan Valley agricultural area and has the ruins of an episcopal palace built in 1636. There is manufacture of tweeds and other woollen materials in Convoy, a village 5 km/3 mi to the west of Raphoe.

St Eunan's Protestant cathedral dates from the 18th century and stands on the site of a former monastery allegedly founded by St Columba. This monastery is also associated with St Adomnán (624-704), a scholar and abbot of Iona who wrote the life of St Columba.

Raphoe became the seat of a bishop during the 12th century; the Protestant diocese was united with that of Derry in 1835.
