Rappahannock

River in Virginia, rising in the Blue Ridge Mountains; length 340 km/211 mi. It flows through Fredericksburg to Chesapeake Bay, parallel and to the south of the Potomac River. Some of the fiercest battles of the American Civil War took place along the Rappahannock and its tributary, the Rapidan.
