reredos| In church architecture, an ornamented wall or screen at the back of the high altar. It usually consists of a screen detached from the wall, and is elaborately adorned with sculpture and tracery or painting. Originally the reredos was a hanging of tapestry or silk; later it became more substantial, but could still be moved, and was used only at certain festivals. |
