Rashōmon

Film directed by Akira Kurosawa in Japan in 1950. Its complex structure examines the nature of truth, with four contradictory versions of a rape and murder by a bandit (played by Toshirō Mifune) told by those involved.

Winning first prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1951, Rashōmon introduced Western audiences to Japanese cinema after World War II. It is set in the 12th century and made in black and white. Rashōmon is the name of one of the gates to the capital, Kyoto.
