Raurkela

Town in Orissa state, northeast India, 345 km/215 mi west of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); population (1991) 398,700. It is the site of a huge steel works built in the 1960s with West German aid, and of a government fertilizer plant. Power for the steel works comes from the Hirakud dam (see Mahanadi River).
