Rauschenberg, Robert (1925–2008)

US pop artist. He created happenings and multimedia works, called ‘combined painting’, such as Monogram (1959; Moderna Museet, Stockholm), a stuffed goat daubed with paint and wearing a car tyre around its body. In the 1960s he returned to painting and used the silk-screen printing process to transfer images to canvas.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, he trained at the Kansas City Art Institute 1946–47, at Black Mountain College, North Carolina 1948–50, and at the Arts Students League in New York. He also designed costumes and sets, notably for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
