Rauschenberg, Robert (1925- )

US pop artist. He has created happenings and multimedia works, called ‘combined painting’, such as Monogram (1959; Moderna Museet, Stockholm), a stuffed goat daubed with paint and wearing a car tyre around its body. In the 1960s he returned to painting and used the silk-screen printing process to transfer images to canvas.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, he trained at the Kansas City Art Institute 1946-47, at Black Mountain College, North Carolina 1948-50, and at the Arts Students League in New York. He has also designed costumes and sets, notably for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
