Rautavaara, Einojuhani (1938– )

Finnish composer. His music embraces a wide variety of idioms, including neoclassicism, serialism, and jazz.

He studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, at the Juilliard School in New York, and with Sessions and Copland at Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts. He was professor at the Sibelius Academy 1976–90.

Works

The Mine (1963), Apollo and Marsyas (1973), Marjatta the Lowly Maiden (1977), Thomas (1985), and Vincent (based on the life of Van Gogh, 1990).

Orchestral

seven symphonies; concertos for cello, piano, and violin.
