Rava Russka, Battle of

In World War I, series of battles September 1914 between Austrian and Russian forces along a line from Tomasov (now Tomaszow Lubelski, Poland) via Grodek (now Gorodok, Ukraine) to Rava Russka (now Rawa Russkaja, Ukraine), resulting in a general retreat by the Austrians. Rava Russka itself fell 8 September 1914.

The Austrian line continued further north but with several gaps, and the Russians were able to infiltrate thorough these to make flank attacks. This destabilized the Austrians as parts of their line fell back, while others remained isolated and attempted to make their own way out of the encircling Russians. The Austrians sustained 250,000 casualties in the course of the operation and some 100,000 troops were captured by the Russians along with 400 guns and quantities of stores.
