Ravi

River in the Indian subcontinent, a tributary of the Indus. It rises in India, forms the boundary between India and Pakistan for some 110 km/70 mi, and enters Pakistan above Lahore, capital of Punjab province, joining the Chenab near Multan, on its 725-km/450-mi course. One of the five rivers which gives the Punjab its name, its waters (with those of the Beas and Sutlej) were allocated to India in the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960.

The area between the Ravi and Beas rivers is irrigated by the Bari Doab Canal which draws water from the Ravi at Madhopur.

One of the young men of fashion - he who was found dead at the bottom of a well on the night of the earthquake had once given him a complete suit of Hindu kit, the costume of a lowcaste street boy, and Kim stored it in a secret place under some baulks in Nila Ram's timber-yard, beyond the Punjab High Court, where the fragrant deodar logs lie seasoning after they have driven down the Ravi.
