Rawlins

Town and administrative headquarters of Carbon County, south-central Wyoming; population (1990) 9,400. It is located to the east of the Red Desert and the Continental Divide, 151 km/94 mi west-northwest of Laramie. Founded in 1868, it has been a railway division point and ranching and mining trade centre. In the 1970s–80s it had oil and coal booms. Its old state prison (1901–81) is a tourist attraction; the new state penitentiary is to the south of the town.
