Rawlinson, George

Rawlinson, George (1812–1902)

English historian and classical scholar. His most outstanding work is a translation 1858–60, with his brother Henry Creswicke Rawlinson and Gardner Wilkinson, of the Greek historian Herodotus. He was professor of ancient history at Oxford 1861–98.

Other works include The Five Great Monarchies of the Ancient Eastern World 1862–67, History of Ancient Egypt 1881, histories of the Phoenicians and Parthians 1885, and a biography of his brother 1898.
