Raymond, Henry Jarvis

Raymond, Henry Jarvis (1820–1869)

US journalist and Republican politician. He cofounded the New York Times 1851. Active in the formation of the Republican Party, he was speaker of the state assembly 1862, named Republican national chair 1864, and elected to Congress.

Raymond was born in Lima, Livingston County, New York, and graduated from the University of Vermont 1840. He became assistant editor of New York Tribune when it was established 1841.
