Raymond, Walter

    0.02 sec.

Raymond, Walter (1852–1931)

English writer. His life on Exmoor, southwestern England, is described in The Book of Simple Delights 1906, which shows his powers as a rural essayist and portraitist. Other works include The Book of Crafts and Character 1907 and English Country Life 1910.

Raymond was born in Yeovil, Somerset. He entered his father's wool business but at the age of 40 abandoned it for literature. After a short time in London he rented a cottage at Withypool, on Exmoor. He admired and was influenced by the work of the Dorset poet William Barnes.

His first novel, Misterton's Mistake 1888, was followed by Gentleman Upcott's Daughter 1892.
