Rebuck, Gail (1952– )

English businesswoman and publisher. A founding director at Century Publishing 1982–85, she was appointed publisher after its merger with Century Hutchinson in 1985, and chairman of the Random House Division after the company was taken over by Random House in 1989. Since 1991 she has been chair and chief executive of Random House (which was itself taken over by Bertelsmann international media group in 1998).

Rebuck was born in London, and educated at the Lycée Français and the University of Sussex. She entered publishing as a production assistant at Grisewood & Dempsey 1975–76 and progressed through the editorial ranks at Robert Nicholson Publications to become publisher 1976–78. Joining the Hamlyn Group in 1979, she helped to establish its mass-market paperback list.

Rebuck has been a non-executive director of BskyB since 2002, and was a trustee of the Institute for Public Policy Research 1993–2003 and of the Work Foundation 2001–08. She was awarded a CBE in the 2000 Honours List.
