reciprocal

Result of dividing a given quantity into 1. Thus the reciprocal of 2 is 1/2; the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2; and the reciprocal of x2 is 1/x2 or x−2. Reciprocals are used to replace division by multiplication, since multiplying by the reciprocal of a number is the same as dividing by that number.

On a calculator, the reciprocals of all numbers except 0 are obtained by using the button marked 1/x.
