Recklinghausen

Industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 24 km/15 mi northwest of Dortmund; population (1995) 127,200. There are coal, iron, chemical, textile, and engineering industries. It is said to have been founded by Charlemagne.

Recklinghausen belonged to the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages, but its present prosperity dates from the 19th-century development of the Ruhr coalfields. It is the home of the Ruhr Festival. To the north is the large Hohe Mark nature reserve. St Peter's church is the oldest building (13th-16th century). There are several museums, including the Icon Museum (with 600 icons from the 15th to the 19th centuries).
