Red Lake

Red Lake

Minnesota's largest lake; area 1,114 sq km/430 sq mi. It is located 48 km/30 mi north of Bemidji. A remnant of glacial Lake Agassiz, it is shallow, and is almost divided into Upper and Lower lakes; a 2.4 km/1.5 mi km-wide Narrows connects the two sections. The Chippewa's Red Lake Indian Reservation lies largely along its west and south; population (1990) 3,700.

The Red Lake River flows from the lake's southwest to Thief River Falls, where the Thief River joins it, then south to Red Lake Falls, southwest to Crookston, and west and northwest to East Grand Forks, where it enters the Red River of the North; length 316 km/196 mi.
