Red Lodge

Town and administrative headquarters of Carbon County, south Montana; population (1990) 2,000. It is located 80 km/50 mi southwest of Billings, on Rock Creek, east of the Beartooth Range. The town is now a resort, noted for its music festival. The area was in Crow territory until the 1880s; it was heavily mined for coal until the 1940s.
