Red River of the North

River in the USA and Canada; length 877 km/545 mi (770 km/440 mi in the USA). It rises in North Dakota and flows north, forming the boundary between Minnesota and North Dakota. It then flows through Manitoba, where it joins the Assiniboine River and flows into Lake Winnipeg.

In Manitoba it crosses a plain which was once Lake Agassiz, a glacially dammed lake whose bed is now a fertile agricultural district. Its main tributaries are the Goose, Sheyenne, and Red Lake rivers.
