Jefferson River

River in Montana, one of the headwaters of the Missouri River. Rising in southwestern Montana, it flows for 333 km/207 mi before joining with the Madison and Gallatin rivers just northeast of Three Forks to form the Missouri River.

Known at its source as the Red Rock River, the Jefferson rises in the Gravelly Range, runs through the Red Rock lakes, turns north at Lima, and passes Dillon, where it becomes the Beaverhead River. It is joined some 40 km/25 mi downstream by the Big Hole and Ruby rivers at Twin Bridges. For the remainder of its course, to the northeast, it is known as the Jefferson.
