Red Wing

Town and administrative headquarters of Goodhue County, southeast Minnesota; population (1990) 15,100. It is situated on the Mississippi River, across from Hager City, Wisconsin, and 64 km/40 mi southeast of St Paul. One of the nation's largest wheat markets in the late 19th century, the town is known for the pottery and footwear that bears its name. Other products include marine engines and rubber goods.

Settled by Scandinavians in 1849, it was named after Dakota leaders who wore the scarlet-dyed wing of a wild swan. Frontenac State Park is 16 km/10 mi southeast and the Richard J Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest lies to the west and south of the town.
