Red or Dead

UK fashion design label established in 1982 by Wayne Hemingway (1961– ). Initially he sold clothing designed by his wife Geraldine, inspired by Russian peasant dress. The first Red or Dead shop opened in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1983. Red or Dead became the first retailer to sell Doc Martens workwear boots and fashion items, and in 1987 Hemingway designed his own-label footwear range. In 1988 he launched clothing collections for men and women, which became popular particularly in the London club scene.
