Redgrave, Steve(n) Geoffrey (1962– )

English rower and gold medallist at five successive Olympic Games 1984–2000. He also won nine gold medals at the World Championships 1986–99, was world indoor rowing champion in 1990, and was a member of the winning four-man bobsleigh team at the National Bobsleigh Championships in 1989. He announced his retirement from rowing in November 2000. In December 2000, he received the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Sports Personality of the Year award, and was elected vice-president of the British Olympic Association (BOA).

Redgrave's most successful rowing partnership was with Matthew Pinsent, with whom he held the coxless pairs world record, set in Lucerne in 1994, and the coxless pairs Olympic record, set in Atlanta in 1996. He was the first British competitor to win gold medals at five consecutive Olympics, an achievement for which he was presented with a special Olympic pin. He was chosen to carry the British team flag at the opening ceremony of both the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. He was knighted in 2001.
