Redlands

City in San Bernardino County, south California; population (1990) 60,400. It is situated 105 km/65 mi east of Los Angeles and 11 km/7 mi southeast of San Bernardino, at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains. A residential community, it also has manufacturers producing aerospace and electrical machinery and furniture. The Redlands Bowl, noted for musical performances, is in Smiley Park. The city is home to the University of Redlands (1907).

Founded in 1881, it became a shipping centre for an irrigated citrus growing district where navel oranges were the main crop. A popular resort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it retains many elegant mansions from that period.
