Redlich, Hans (Ferdinand)

Redlich, Hans (Ferdinand) (1903-1968)

Austrian-born British musicologist. He specialized in Monteverdi, several of whose works he edited, including the Vespers of 1610 and L'Incoronazione di Poppea, and on whom he wrote two books (1932 and 1949, English edition 1952). He also wrote on modern music including a book on Alban Berg.

He studied at the Universities of Vienna, Munich, and Frankfurt. In 1925-29 he was opera conductor at Mainz, but in 1939 he took refuge in England. From 1955 to 1962 he was lecturer at Edinburgh University and in 1962 was appointed professor at Manchester University.
